I’m Back, Compiz-Beryl Merge
Filed under: Compiz, UbuntuWoohoo, I got my website running again. Thanks Mez.
As I’m sure you’ve heard by now, Compiz and Beryl are rejoining. On the compiz side we were in the process of splitting into ‘compiz’ and ‘compiz-extra’. Compiz is the core and essential plugins like resize, move, etc. Compiz-extra is where all the other plugins go plus any other plugins, decorators, apps, etc we want to add. This area is where the merge is happening. Instead of Beryl rebasing on Compiz and providing plugins, decorators, apps, etc (and basically being the exact same thing as compiz-extra) we’ve decided to combine our efforts.
Things are somewhat slow going as we work out the details but we should at least have a new forum and git repo setup soon. The hard work of deciding on a name, roadmap, project structure, etc is still ongoing but at least we’ll have a place to code and for users.

This sounds like it *might* be a good idea. Both projects have their proponents, that’s for sure. I haven’t used Compiz in quite some time, but I have been using Beryl quite a bit. Good luck to both parties! I look forward to seeing the fruits of your labours.
……. I would contribute, but I would probably be more of an inhibitor than anything
I would be happy if Compiz began to be used like a standard lib to implement desktop effects in Linux (to be used in different apps or in whatever any developer wants), and Beryl like a different app to implement that eye candy effects that the Compiz-lib provides.
Briefly: Compiz need to be like “Core Animation” from Mac OS X.
Sorry for my ignorance, but seems to me that that would be something very good.
Oh, and the project it self could be named simply “Compiz”, and “Beryl” could be inside that project…
They can work together, it’s just a name an a hierarchy.
That’s actually the plan for Compiz, more or less. It’s supposed to be a common core that you can build any kind of WM on top of. And with the planned retained mode drawing (scenegraph) interface you’ll be able to use Compiz in apps too. Of course, the requires you to use a WM that uses Compiz.
About the naming stuff, none of the people working on compiz right now want to work on a ‘beryl’ project. The beryl guys seem to be happy to get rid of the name too as the project is not well liked by many people because it’s a fork.
